It’s been a big year on the road for the Chicago Underground Duo — Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor — touring Hyperglyph, their first duo album in eleven years (International Anthem). After the Newport Jazz Festival on July 31, the duo spent the fall in Europe, closing the run at Jazzfest Berlin on October 31.

Ahead of the Berlin show, Mazurek spoke with Kaput’s Thomas Venker about nearly three decades of partnership with Taylor, trust as the constant at the heart of the duo, life and silence in Marfa, Texas, Chicago’s AACM lineage, technology, collaboration and cosmology.

“I search for the sound inside the sound. A note is never just a note.”
— Rob Mazurek, in Kaput
