CONTACT Art Project Space, Rome (October 14 – November 14, 2026)
Radical Chimeras - Rome is a new configuration of Rob Mazurek’s multidisciplinary project, developed and produced during the artist’s residency at CONTACT Art Project Space in Rome’s Esquilino district, beginning October 6, 2026. The exhibition was not defined before the artist’s arrival. It took shape progressively through the relationship between sound, images, materials, structures and the architecture of the space, which opened to the public as an open studio on October 10 and 11 as part of Romadiffusa Esquilino 2026.
At the core of Radical Chimeras is a continuous process of transformation: sound becomes image, image becomes movement, movement becomes sculptural form, and form can return to sound. Finished paintings are photographed and fed into a specially developed program which, through the sounds and compositions of the Exploding Star Orchestra, cuts, granulates, fragments and displaces the images, reconstructing them as moving fields of color, texture, rhythm and light.
In Rome, the animations inhabit three vertical screens and a projection passing through four translucent scrims onto the back wall of the space. Stills extracted from the animations become sound prints on polyester fabric and microperforated PVC, incorporated into sculptural constructions of mesh, tulle, copper, leather, twine and wood. Two works in the courtyard carry the process outside, into natural light, air and architecture.
The opening on October 13, 2026 included a live performance with Igor Legari (double bass), Filippo Abrate and Ermanno Baron (percussion).
